During the time of the early American colonies homosexuality was against the law, and in some places could be punishable by death. Homosexuality was seen as an illness and was mistakenly recognized as a mental disorder. However, by the end of the 19th century, medicine and psychiatry were competing with religion and law, and the widespread belief that homosexuality was a medical problem started to become less popular. Still, some people still claim homosexuality is an ilness, which it is not.
